1st Annual River Clean-Up nets over 1500 pounds

of trash from the Topock Gorge!

Saturday, October 4, 2014

The Kiwanis of the Colorado River partnered up with Capt. Doyle's FunFishing Guide Service and Topock66 Spa & Resort to host the inaugural Rockin' River Clean-Up event on Saturday October 4th.  Twelve boats and nearly 80 volunteers hauled off over 1500 pounds of trash from the water and beaches along the Topock Gorge.

Boats filled with volunteers launched at the Topock Marina and headed down river through the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge. While enjoying the beautiful scenery the volunteers cleaned nearly 8 miles of the river, they collected a variety of interesting items including a picnic table, a giant sign and a disco ball! Capt. Doyle's Fun Fishing Guides patrolled the river to provide extra trash bags and water to volunteers. A fabulous lunch was served by the Topock 66 Marina, and special prizes were awarded. Troy and April Garrett took home the prize for the boat with most trash hauled in with a whopping 264 pounds!

It was a perfect day for the event with sunny skies and barely a breeze. Volunteers from the local Girl Scout Troops, the Golden Shores Offroaders Club, the Kiwanis and many more all rallied to make the event a success. We wish to extend a special thank you to those who volunteered, provided food, supplies, and prizes for the scavenger hunt and raffle.
